BECOMING A MEMBER
Membership Class Schedule
Twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, Redemption Hill Church offers a membership class. The class typically meets on Friday night, Saturday morning and Sunday after church (two-hour blocks). Any people considering becoming members, whether adults or children, must take this class. The Friday night class and the second hour of the Sunday class are for adults only.
Taking the Membership Class does not obligate you to sit for a Session interview and become a member. Also, if you want to become a member but your schedule does not fit when classes are offered, contact Pastor Peter directly.
Membership Class Content
During these classes, attendees learn about the mission of Redemption Hill Church, the meaning of the gospel, the meaning of the membership questions (see the five questions below), how we fit and operate within the Presbyterian Church in America (our denomination), the essentials of the Reformed faith, and the power and purpose of the Lord’s Supper.
Membership Types
Like all PCA churches, we have two types of membership:
-
Communing members
-
Non-communing members
Communing members are people who are baptized and have been carefully examined by the Session concerning their faith, knowledge and holy living. These members have all the rights and privileges of membership, including taking Communion and voting in Congregational Meetings. Communing Members must be able to sincerely answer ‘yes’ to the following questions:
1. Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope save in His sovereign mercy?
2. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the Gospel?
3. Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes the followers of Christ?
4. Do you promise to support the Church in its worship and work to the best of your ability?
5. Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the Church, and promise to study its purity and peace?
Non-communing members are the children of Communing Members. They ought to be baptized as covenant children and are entitled to all instruction and oversight the church can offer. As summarized in the Book of Church Order, “When they have reached the age of discretion, they become subject to obligations of the covenant: faith, repentance and obedience.” (Chapter 56, section 4)
